.MBOX File Extension

The file extension MBOX stands for Mailbox and MBOX is the most common electronic mail format which is used to accumulate and organizing E-Mail messages in a single text file format on a hard drive in which all the massages for each and every mailbox are stored.

The MBOX file identifies the start of each message by the "From" (sometimes "From_") line beginning each one. Taken in conjunction with an empty line, which signifies the end of the previous message, the word "From" at the start of a line indicates to a program the beginning of a new message.

File Description:

Apple Mail 1.x (included with Mac OS X) saved messages in MBOX files and stored them in the User→Library→Mail→Mailboxes folder.

Apple 2.0 and later uses .EMLX format, which separates the messages into individual files so they can be searched by the Spotlight program.
